Practices & home games are played at Lillie Park on Platt Rd in Pittsfield Twp
Season runs from early April through May. First outdoor practice will be in March depending on weather. We will play 5-6 regular season games in April and May. The state tournament for qualifying teams is the end of May.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A RUGBY PLAYER?
FITNESS! In an average high school match (60 min), you will spend 75% of that time sprinting or running hard. In a typical game players run 3 to 4 miles along with tackling, running the ball, set formations and open field play.
Develop Rugby skills – running and passing on the run, making a rugby pass, tackling, kicking (punting) on the run, place kicking field goals, drop kicking field goals – we will teach you….good kickers are welcome!
Personal weight training is important. Strong necks, shoulders, backs, arms and legs are needed
Players with other sports experience are the most successful in rugby but we have had players who are in the school band, orchestra and other extra-curriculars who have gone on to be great players. Previous experience playing football, soccer, lacrosse, & cross country, basketball, wrestling, and hockey, will all enhance key characteristics of a great rugger.
If you are playing a winter sport, start practicing with us as soon as your winter season ends. Let us know your status so we can include you on the roster we must submit to USA and Michigan Rugby in late February.
WHO DO WE PLAY?
League play includes Southeast Michigan clubs such as Howell, Brighton, Troy, Catholic Central, Downriver, Loyola, Birmingham, and others. Beyond SE Michigan high school rugby is played in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Grand Haven, Traverse City and elsewhere.
FUNDING
The club receives some financial support from rugby alumni, friends and parents but players buy their own jersey, shorts and socks and assist with paying fees for field rental, referees, post game food and refreshments and tournaments. Coaches are unpaid volunteers so total cost is much lower other high school sports.
Approximate club dues are $150 each season. Scholarships are available. Don't let cost stop you from coming out and playing. We will find a way for every interested player to participate.
